American LegionGame 1: Russell 18, Smith Center 2

Game 2: Smith Center 9, Russell 4

The Russell American Legion Post 99 Senior Baseball team picked up its first win of the 2019 season on Sunday with an 18-2 road victory at Smith Center in the first game of a doubleheader.

The bulk of the damage was done by Kirk Huser who drove in six runs while Kaden Rome drove in five.  Kyle Farmer pitched a complete game for Russell as the game ended after the fourth inning due to the 15-run rule.

Russell's bid for a sweep fell by the wayside late in Game 2 as Smith Center overcame a 3-1 deficit with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Russell plated a run in the top of the seventh but it was not enough.

Cole Schmidtberger led Russell offensively with three hits while Josh Foster took the loss in relief.

Russell (1-3) will next be in action on Friday, June 14 with a doubleheader at Hoisington.

Meanwhile, the Russell American Legion Junior Baseball team's scheduled doubleheader with Ellsworth on Friday night was canceled because Ellsworth did not have enough players. The Junior team will next be in action Wednesday, June 12 at Kinsley.
