Big Innings Prove Too Much for Sr. Legion

Russell Legion Baseball PatchHAYS-The Russell Post 99 Senior American Legion Baseball team fell to 0-2 in pool play at the AA/AAA State Baseball Tournament with a 17-1 loss to Sabetha at Larks Park in a game that ended after four innings.

Sabetha which was 34-1 on the season coming into the game and who had defeated Norton 15-0 in their first pool play game Wednesday, scored 14 runs in the first two innings off three different Russell pitchers taking advantage of numerous walks and wild pitches.  Sabetha scored their first six runs in the first inning without the benefit of a base hit.

Russell got on the scoreboard in the third inning after a pitching change by Sabetha and drew three straight walks to load the bases before Brayden Ford scored on a wild pitch.  Sabetha then scored three more runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI double and back to back RBI singles.  In the bottom of the fourth Russell got consecutive singles from Kirk Huser and Andrew Roth before Sabetha pitcher Jalen Worthley recorded two strikeouts.  Sabetha Coach Paul Herl then made a pitching change and Gabe Garber struck out Kaden Rome to end the game after four innings due to the 10-run rule.

Walker Braun took the loss for Russell.  Also pitching for Post 99 were Kyle Farmer, Huser and Aiden Rohr who saw action for the first time in postseason play.  Brayden Becker who tossed two perfect innings and struck out five of the six Russell batters he faced got the win.

Russell will wrap up play at the State Tournament and their 2019 season on Friday against Norton.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
