Victoria Makes Statement in Season-Opening Rout

Victoria High SchoolOTIS-The Victoria Knights Football team entered Friday evening's 2019 season opener as an underdog against an Otis-Bison team that had five seniors in their starting lineup while Victoria had just two on their entire roster.

However, it was coach Doug Oberle's Knights who looked like the more experienced team combining efficient scoring drives with a relentless defense en route to a 42-14 victory at Cougar Field.  The Knights received the opening kickoff and drove 63 yards in nine plays, capping off the drive on Drayden Karlin's seven-yard run for an 8-0 lead after the two-point conversion.  After the Cougars turned the ball over on downs in Victoria territory, the Knights drove 50 yards in six plays with Jayvon Pruitt carrying the ball across the goal line from four yards out for a 16-0 advantage after the first period.

Victoria widened the lead to 24-0 in the second quarter when sophomore Quarterback Grant Schoenrock threw a three-yard scoring pass to Karlin and then with five seconds left before halftime connected with Pruitt from 20 yards out to send Victoria into the locker room with a 30-0 cushion leaving the Otis-Bison players and fans stunned.

In the third quarter, Victoria was denied a scoring opportunity when they turned the ball over on downs on the Otis-Bison three-yard line but their defense came up with a huge play on the next Cougar drive.  Pruitt stripped Otis-Bison Quarterback Kaden Foust of the ball and Trenton Engel scooped up the fumble and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown to expand the margin to 36-0.  Victoria's last touchdown of the game occurred in the first 18 seconds of the fourth quarter when Schoenrock scored from one yard out.  Foust scored touchdowns on runs of one and 15 yards to make the final outcome a little more respectable.

Victoria rushed for 252 yards with Pruitt leading the way with 84 while Schoenrock added 74 yards on the ground.  Schoenrock completed six of seven passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions as the Knights emerged from the game turnover-free.

Victoria (1-0) will play their home opener next Friday, September 13 against defending 8-Man Division l State Champion Central Plains.  The Oilers saw their 13-game winning streak end Friday night when they were upset at home by Ness City 36-30.  Otis-Bison hits the road to take on Bucklin.
