LaCrosse Nips Russell

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team lost 14-12 at LaCrosse on Friday, September 13 in its week two matchup with the Leopards.

Neither team scored in the first quarter.

Russell (0-2) scored the first touchdown of the game with 10:46 left in the second period. Russell running back Rhett Pospichal capped off a seven play, 65 yard drive with a 32 yard TD run. The two-point conversion was good, but then called back due to a penalty. The retry was no good and the score stayed 6-0. LaCrosse (2-0) then scored a touchdown with 2:03 to play in the first half on a 14 yard run by running back Colby Stull to finish off an eight play, 57 yard drive. The two-point conversion was successful and the Leopards held an 8-6 advantage at the half.

The LaCrosse offense chewed up a bunch of clock in the third stanza. The Leopards opened the second half with the ball and finished their first possession of the third quarter with a touchdown at the 5:27 mark. Stull capped off the 13 play, 53 yard drive with a three yard TD run. The extra point kick was no good. LaCrosse ran 25 offensive plays in the third frame compared to Russell's four. The Leopards led 14-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Russell defense made some great plays down the stretch and put LaCrosse in several long yardage situations. One of them resulted in a fumble inside the LaCrosse 10 yard line. Russell's Gavin Ewers recovered the fumble at the LaCrosse seven yard line and then on the next offensive play, Pospichal ran the ball into the endzone for a touchdown with 3:40 left to play. At that point, the Broncos still trailed 14-12 and needed the two-point conversion. However, the conversion attempt was no good. Russell's Jesse Whitmer intercepted a LaCrosse pass on the subsequent Leopard drive with under two minutes to play and gave the Broncos a chance to come back and win the game. However, Russell couldn't make anything happen, the LaCrosse defense turned the Broncos over on downs and the Leopards survived for the victory.
