Russell Defeats Goodland

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team (1-6, 1-3 3A District 8) picked up its first win of the season on Friday, October 18 at Shaffer Field in Russell with a 25-0 victory over Goodland (1-6, 0-4 3A District 8) in a game that was called due to lightning and rain with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter.

Bronco running back Jesse Whitmer scored the first touchdown of the game on a 45 yard run at the 3:47 mark in the first quarter. The extra point kick was good by kicker Andres Narvaez and Russell led 7-0 after one period.

Russell running back Rhett Pospichal capped off an 11 play, 79 yard drive with a 29 yard TD scamper with 2:44 to play in the first half. Narvaez hit the extra point and the Broncos led 14-0 at the break.

Pospichal scored another touchdown with 6:40 left in the third stanza when he rushed 14 yards to pay dirt. Bronco quarterback Jacob Sohm then connected with tight end Braydon Gibson on a successful two-point conversion pass. Later in the third quarter, Narvaez drilled a 26 yard field goal and Russell led 25-0 heading into the final period.

Lightning and rain moved into Russell in the fourth quarter and the game was called early, giving Russell the win.

The Broncos outgained Goodland 236 to 77 yards. All of Russell's yards were on the ground.

Pospichal led with 101 yards on 11 carries. Whitmer followed with 92 yards on 17 carries.

Defensively, Russell's Gavin Ewers blocked a punt and intercepted a pass. Andrew Roth also recorded an interception for the Broncos.

The Broncos next travel to Beloit on Friday, October 25. Catch the game on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 PM. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
