Batchman's Big Game Sparks Mustangs

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolSYLVAN GROVE-Senior Beau Batchman rushed for 254 yards and six touchdowns in his final home game at Weatherman Field as the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs cruised to an easy 58-8 win over their arch-rivals from Wilson Friday night in the regular season finale for both teams.

After the Dragons went three and out on their first series, the Mustangs scored on their first possession when Batchman found the end zone from 11 yards out on fourth down and the two-point conversion made the score 8-0 as they completed a seven-play 50-yard drive.  Sylvan-Lucas got the ball back when Wilson's Camryn Eberhart fumbled on the Dragons 24-yard line.  The Mustangs put together another seven-play drive which ended when Alex Hernandez scored from 15 yards out on a fourth down play and the two-point conversion increased the lead to 16-0.

The lead swelled to 22-0 at the end of the first quarter when Batchman scored from 38 yards out on the drive's only play but the two-point conversion was no good.

Wilson came into the contest not having scored on the Mustangs since 2016 but that changed early in the second period when Cooper Weinhold set the Dragons up with a first and goal on the Sylvan-Lucas three-yard line after a 40-yard run.  Two plays later Eberhart scored from two yards out and then threw a successful pass for the two-point conversion to make the score 22-8 with 7:06 left in the half.

Sylvan-Lucas then turned on the steam as Batchman scored on runs of 37, 42 and 23 yards to swell the advantage to 44-8 on drives that lasted two plays, one play and one play.  Hernandez scored his second touchdown of the game from 11 yards out with 40 seconds left in the half and the two-point conversion was good to make the score 52-8 at halftime but the margin was not enough to end the game.

Wilson opened the second half with an onsides kick and recovered it at the Sylvan-Lucas 33-yard line then Weinhold ran nine yards to set up a second and one at the 24-yard line.  However, the drive stalled as the Mustang defense stiffened and the Dragons were hurt by a pair of penalties though one was declined allowing Sylvan-Lucas to take over.

Two plays later the game ended when Batchman scored his sixth touchdown of the night on a 43 yard run on the final play of his high school career on his home field with 9:09 left in the third quarter to provide the final margin of 58-8.

Batchman accounted for 254 of Sylvan-Lucas' 312 yards of total offense, all of them on the ground as the Mustangs attempted just one pass during the entire game.   Weinhold was Wilson's leading rusher with eight carries for 69 yards.

Sylvan-Lucas (5-3, 3-2) ends the regular season on a three-game winning streak and will go on the road for their first round playoff game on Thursday, October 31 against an opponent to be determined.   Wilson (1-7, 0-5) will finish the season next Thursday in a cross-district game also against an opponent to be determined.
