Osborne Ends Sylvan-Lucas' Season

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolOSBORNE-Steele Wolters rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns as the #1 ranked Osborne Bulldogs pulled away from Sylvan-Lucas for a 40-6 victory over the Mustangs in the second round of the 8-Man Division ll Playoffs Friday evening at Liberty Field.

The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and marched 41 yards in four plays with Wolters finishing the drive with a 16-yard run and led 8-0 after the two-point conversion just 1:50 into the game.  Sylvan Lucas then took nine minutes off the clock in the first period with a 14-play, 45-yard drive but it ended on an incomplete pass allowing Osborne to take over.

The Bulldogs next drive was marred by penalties pushing them from the Sylvan-Lucas nine-yard line all the way back to the 38 before Wolters was intercepted by Alex Hernandez allowing the Mustangs to gain possession.  Three plays later however, Sylvan-Lucas turned the ball right back over when Beau Batchman fumbled as he was going to the ground and Osborne took over on the Mustangs 27-yard line.

Wolters scored from 10 yards out with 1:13 left in the second quarter to increase the Bulldog lead to 16-0 after the two-point play.  However, Sylvan-Lucas put together a six play, 58-yard drive and scored its lone touchdown as time expired in the first half when Batchman connected on an eight-yard touchdown pass with Hernandez.  The two-point conversion failed leaving Osborne in front 16-6 at intermission.

Sylvan-Lucas began the second half with a nine-play, 33-yard drive which stalled at the Osborne 34-yard line allowing the Bulldogs to take over.  Six plays later Mason Schurr scored on a 32-yard run after an earlier TD run was called back by a penalty and the two-point conversion was good increasing the Osborne advantage to 24-6.  In the final minute of the quarter, the Bulldogs swelled the lead to 32-6 when Wolters scored from six yards out and then added the two-point conversion with another run.

With 4:26 left in the game, Osborne put the icing on the cake with a 13-yard run by Wolters and the two-point conversion.

Osborne (10-0) outgained Sylvan-Lucas on offense 340 to 192 and won handily despite losing fullback Darrien Holloway to a foot injury in the first quarter.  Holloway did not return in the second half and his status for upcoming playoff games is ucertain.  The Bulldogs also had six penalties for 40 yards while Sylvan-Lucas was flagged three times for 30 yards, a significant improvement after committing 12 penalties for 105 yards in their first round win over Triplains-Brewster last week.

The Bulldogs who won their Regional title with Friday's win advance to the State Quarterfinals or Sectionals next Friday when they travel to Kiowa to take on South Barber which was a 62-22 winner over Norwich in their second round contest.

Sylvan-Lucas concludes the 2019 season with a record of 6-4 as Batchman and Kilby Meyer who are both seniors played their final games in a Mustangs uniform.
