Back to Two Divisions for Class 1A Schools

KSHSAA LogoStarting with the 2020-21 school year, Class 1A schools will be going back to two divisions in postseason competition for volleyball, basketball and scholars bowl.

The announcement was made on Thursday, November 21 by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

According to the press release, 70 of the 117 member schools voted in favor to go back to two divisions. More than 59 votes were needed to approve the proposal required by KSHSAAA bylaws.

In 2009, Class 1A schools voted to split into two divisions. Then in 2017 during the reclassification proposal, a vote put 1A back together in one class.

The KSHSAA did make a note in the release "With this change in classification, the postseason format and calendar will change. The Executive Board will approve the competition schedule/format at the January 15-16, 2020 meeting. It is premature to believe the schedule/format will return to the exact same schedule/format followed when Class 1A previously crowned two division champions."
