Russell Splits at Republic County

The Russell High School girls basketball team traveled to Belleville on Friday, February 7 and defeated Republic County 48-33. It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Lady Broncos.

Russell jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter and led 22-14 at halftime and 30-19 after the third period. The Lady Broncos hit free throws in the fourth frame to pull away.

Rylan Reeves led Russell with a career-high 24 points and 16 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season. Camille Dortland followed with 13 points. Dortland was eight-of-eight from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Sadee Graves led the Lady Buffs with nine points and Alexis Hansen had 10 boards.

The Lady Broncos were 15-of-23 from the foul line.

The Russell girls improve to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the NCAA.

The boys game was a high-scoring affair with Republic County winning 82-67.

The Buffaloes led 22-11 after the first stanza, 43-28 at the half and 63-48 after three quarters. Each time the Broncos mounted a comeback, Republic County had an answer.

Braydon Gibson led Russell with a career-high 18 points. He shot nine-of-nine from the charity stripe. Jacob Sohm scored 14 points. Rhett Pospichal scored 11 points. Payden Leiker scored a career-high 10 points.

Blake Aurand paced Republic County with 20 points and 14 boards. Following him were Clint Callaway with 17 points, Tate Lapo with 13 points, and Alex Fisher and Hunter Hartner with 10 points.

The Broncos were 19-of-23 from the free throw line, but were out-rebounded 40 to 28 and 16 to two on the offensive glass.

The Russell boys fall to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the league.
