RHS Closes Regular Season with Split

The Russell High School girls basketball team closed out the regular season on the road on Tuesday, February 25 with a 49-37 win at Minneapolis. It was the Lady Broncos' seventh win in the last 10 games.

The Lady Lions controlled the first quarter and led 10-2 after one. Russell outscored Minneapolis 10-6 in the second period, but still trailed 16-12 at halftime. The Lady Broncos claimed their first lead of the contest with about a minute remaining in the third stanza and held a 28-25 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Russell pulled away in the final frame by hitting 10-of-14 free throws.

Rylan Reeves led Russell with 23 points and Camille Dortland followed with 15 points.

Cameron Cleveland paced Minneapolis with 15 points.

Despite committing 22 turnovers in the game, the Russell girls improve to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in the NCAA.

The Minneapolis boys dominated Russell and won 82-46.

The Lions jumped out to a 25-6 lead after the first period, led 53-22 at the break and 78-34 after three quarters. The entire fourth period was played with a running clock.

Jacob Sohm led RHS with 13 points.

Eleven players scored for the Lions led by Trent Moeckel's 16 points. Spencer Davidson and Nolan White each scored 12 points. Dylan Pieschl finished with 11 points.

The Russell boys fall to 2-18 overall and 0-12 in the league.

The Russell girls and boys will play in the Beloit 3A Sub-State Tournament next week. Brackets will be released Wednesday, February 26. The boys will play Monday, March 2 and will most likely travel to top-seeded Beloit. The girls will play Tuesday, March 3 and will play TMP, but a host site has not yet been determined as both teams have the same record.
