Day 1 Recap: SLUHS' Barrientes Makes Title Match, Russell's Baldwin and Windholz in Consolation Bracket

2020 KSHSAA Boys State Wrestling LogoThree of four area wrestlers are in the running for top three finishes after day one of the Class 3-2-1A State Tournament at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

Tra Barrientes from Sylvan-Lucas won his first three matches on Friday, February 28 to make the state championship match at 285 pounds. He pinned Thayn Walt from Hill City in the first round, Andrew Watts from Humbolt by a fall in the quarterfinals and won a 10-5 decision over Creighton Johnson of Beloit in the semifinals. Barrientes avenged his only loss of the season, which came to Johnson. He is now 38-1 and will take on Republic County's Eyann Zimmerman (37-8) on Saturday.

Russell's Stephan Baldwin and Jacob Windholz both went 2-1 on Friday and will wrestle in the consolation semifinals on Saturday. Baldwin won his first two matches Friday at 120 pounds, beating Nick Slawson of Wellsville by a technical fall (2:20) in the first round and Rossville's JR Thelwell by a 7-6 decision in the quarterfinals before losing to Colton Shoemaker of Smith Center by a 9-4 decision in the semifinals. Baldwin is 39-11 on the season. Windholz also won his first two matches Friday at 132 pounds, beating Gavin Cooper of St. Francis by a 9-0 major decision in the first round and Brian Escobar of Anthony/Harper-Chaparral by a 9-1 major decision in the quarterfinals before losing to Hoxie's Derek Johnson by a 5-3 decision in the semifinals. He is 36-6.

Brayden Strobel, a freshman from Russell, went 0-2 at 138 pounds and ends his season with a 13-19 record.
