Sylvan-Lucas Boys Rally to Take Regional Title

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolBoys: Sylvan-Lucas 42, Central Plains 35

CLAFLIN-Jonah Huehl scored 23 points and Jaxson Heenan added 14 as the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs overcame an eight-point third quarter deficit and defeated Central Plains 42-35 Saturday night in the Class 1A Regional Championship game on the Oilers home court at Central Plains High School in Claflin.

The first quarter was back and forth for the most part until Central Plains went on a 6-0 run to close it and lead 12-6.  In the second quarter, the Mustangs rallied to tie the score 12-12 and later, it was knotted at 14-14 when the Oilers scored the final five points before intermission for a 19-14 advantage.

In the third quarter, Central Plains, the two-time defending state champions, widened their lead to 23-15 before Heenan knocked down the first of his three pointers and Huehl completed a three-point play to pull Sylvan-Lucas to within 23-21 with eight minutes left to play.

The Mustangs, who lost to Central Plains at home in last year's regional final 59-17, then took their first lead on another three-point play by Huehl.  After an Oiler free throw tied the score 24-24, another Heenan trey put Sylvan-Lucas ahead for good and the Mustangs pulled away to caputure the top-seed out of the Central Plains Regional.  Huehl, who scored 31 points in Thursday's semifinal win over Natoma, scored nine of his 23 points in the final quarter.

Free throw shooting proved to be the major difference in this game as Sylvan-Lucas made 11 of 14 attempts for 79 percent, while Central Plains (10-13) missed 14 of 23 free throws for 39 percent and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

The regional title capped off quite a sports day for Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School as earlier Saturday, the Mustangs' Tra Barrientes won the Class 3-2-1A State Championship at 285 pounds at the State Wrestling Tournament in Hays.

Sylvan-Lucas (17-6) advances to the Trego Sub-State in WaKeeney and will take on Logan (14-9) at 7:30 PM on Thursday, March 5. That game will be broadcast on KRSL 95.9 FM and streamed on KRSL.com.

In the girls regional championship game earlier Saturday evening in Claflin, the Central Plains Lady Oilers ran their winning streak to 133 games, now the third longest in American sports history, with a 68-24 victory over Otis-Bison.
