Lady Bronco Comeback Falls Short

Russell Bronco BasketballGirls: TMP-Marian 47, Russell 43

HAYS-The Russell High School girls basketball team mounted an impressive second half rally Tuesday night, but in the end came up short as the TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs hung on for a 47-43 win at Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays in the first round of the Class 3A Beloit Sub-State Tournament.

The Lady Broncos never led in the game and the only tie was 2-2 in the first minute.  After that, the Lady Monarchs finished the quarter on a 12-2 run to lead 14-4.  Turnovers and missed shots from close range plagued Russell in the second quarter as they fell behind 24-12 at intermission.

In the third quarter, TMP-Marian led by as many as 14 points before the Lady Broncos embarked on a 10-0 run to close the gap to 30-26 late in the period and Russsell trailed just 32-26 with eight minutes remaining.  In the fourth quarter, the Lady Monarchs stretched their lead back out to nine points, but Emerson Nichols and Camille Dortland combined to knock down three three-pointers to bring Russell back.  The last three-pointer with 12 seconds left made the score 46-43 in favor of TMP-Marian.  The Lady Monarchs (10-12) then hit one of two free throws with 7.3 seconds left to seal the victory and advance to a Friday night date in the semifinals against Phillipsburg which defeated Concordia 68-53.

Ryleigh Wagner led Russell with 11 pionts while TMP-Marian's Kyleigh Allen led all scorers with 12 points.  In other Beloit Sub-State action Tuesday, Beloit survived an upset bid by Minneapolis and won 51-50, while Norton cruised past Hoisington 58-34.
