He had 40 career technical falls, which ranks seventh on the Kansas Top 20. He had 15 his sophomore year (tied for 13th on the Kansas Top 20) and 14 his senior year (tied for 18th on the Kansas Top 20).

On receiving the offer from Dixie State, RHS Assistant Wrestling Coach and Stephan's father Mark Baldwin said, "I received a text from the Coach asking about Stephan and that he needed a really good 125 lb wrestler. He had seen video on Stephan and liked his style. Stephan was going back and forth between Cloud and Barton. I showed Stephan all the info. He told me I'm not going there. He talked to the Coach a few times. And he decided he couldn't pass up the opportunity."
