Broncos Top Republic Co. for First Win

The Russell High School football team earned their first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 21, beating Republic County 42-14 in Belleville.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Broncos (1-3 overall, 1-3 NCAA) took control with a pair of second quarter touchdowns by Dylan Walker. Russell led 14-0 at halftime.
Chase Prester added a TD late in the third quarter to give the Broncos a 22-0 lead.
The two teams combined for five fourth quarter touchdowns - three by Russell and two by Republic County (0-4, 0-4). But the Buffaloes never got closer than 22 in the final quarter.
Walker had his biggest night as a Bronco. The senior halfback rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Prester followed with a career-high 98 yards on the ground and two scores. Noah Gfeller had 36 yards rushing and a touchdown. Kyle Schroeder also rushed for a TD.
Russell outgained Republic County 438-204 in total yards. All 438 yards came on the ground.
The Broncos snap a six-game losing streak with the victory. The Buffaloes have now lost 18-straight games dating back to the 2010 season.
Russell returns home for their next two games and begins that stretch on Friday when they host SE-Saline (2-2). It's also homecoming at RHS. Kickoff is at 7pm. Countdown to Kickoff begins at little earlier at 6:15pm on Classic Hits 95.9 and www.krsl.com.
