Victoria Runs Away From LaCrosse

Victoria KnightsVICTORIA-Carson Werth rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns while Grant Schoenrock tacked on 103 yards rushing and two scores of his own as the fifth-ranked Victoria Knights opened the 2020 season with a 42-14 victory over LaCrosse on Friday evening in Central Prairie League action.

The Knights who have not had a losing season in the 21st century got off to a fast start on their opening possession by driving 45 yards in four plays with Schoenrock opening the scoring on a 21-yard run and for a 6-0 Victoria lead after the two-point conversion failed.  Werth then scored on a 62-yard scamper later in the quarter and the Knights led 14-0 with a successful two-point try.

The lead grew to 22-0 late in the second quarter when Schoenrock tallied his second touchdown of the game from 52 yards out after recovering a Leopard fumble on defense on the previous play.  Just 33 seconds later LaCrosse, playing their first game as an 8-Man team after transitioning from 11-Man Football, got on the board when Freshman Quarterback Caden Morgan who replaced Colby Stull who had started the game, connected with Stull on a 65-yard touchdown pass leaving the score at 22-6 at intermission after the missed two-point conversion.

Victoria scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter on a 26-yard run by Jayvon Pruitt and a 27-yard jaunt by Werth to grow the lead to 36-6.  LaCrosse found the end zone once again late in the period on a 55-yard scoring pass from Morgan to Stull.  Victoria closed out the scoring with 6:45 remaining in the contest on Pruitt's second TD from 14 yards out.

Victoria outgained LaCrosse 445-271 in this match-up of schools just 37 miles apart.  Stull was the leading ground gainer for the Leopards with 73 yards on 21 carries while making his two receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns.  Morgan completed seven passes in 12 attempts for 175 yards and two scores.

Victoria (1-0) opens District play next Friday at Chase while LaCrosse (0-1) will host Hoxie.
