Russell Shutout in Opener

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell High School football team opened the 2020 season on the road at Mid-Continent League opponent Ellis on Friday, September 4 with a 32-0 loss to the Railroaders.

Neither team scored in the first quarter.

However, Ellis scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, two runs and one pass, and led 19-0 at halftime. Running back Konnor Pfeifer scored a seven-yard TD rush and quarterback Tegan Cain rushed for a score and passed for another. The TD pass was caught by Mason Gottschalk on a 65-yard strike.

Cain hooked up with wide receiver Samuel Honas for a two-yard touchdown pass in the third period and the Railers led 25-0 after three frames.

The final score for the Railers came with 6:38 to play in the game when Cain threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Daniel Eck.

With the win, Ellis is 1-0 and Russell falls to 0-1.

The Railroaders outgained the Broncos 427 total yards to 68. Russell finished with 40 yards on the ground and 28 yards through the air, while Ellis finished with 195 yards rushing and 232 yards passing.

Ellis' Pfeifer rushed for 126 yards on 22 carries and Cain passed for all 232 yards on nine completions.

Russell won the turnover battle as the Broncos recovered a fumble on a punt and cornerback Braydon Gibson intercepted two passes. RHS quarterbacks threw two interceptions.
