Russell Splits First Round Games vs. Lincoln

The Russell High School girls basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young season following a 50-46 upset of Lincoln in the first round of the Morris-Stephens Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Russell.
The Lady Broncos trailed 23-21 at halftime, but outscored Lincoln 22-4 in the third quarter to take a 43-27 lead. Russell went up by 18 early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Leopards stormed back. Lincoln, who is ranked ninth in Class 2A, went on a 19-4 run to cut the deficit to four, but could not get closer as time ran out.
Madison Beagley scored 16 points and Megan Boxberger 10 to lead Russell. The Lady Broncos also held Lincoln's all-state guard and Kansas Newman signee Jenna Farris to 14 points.
In the boys game, Russell nearly ended their long losing streak, but fell short and lost 52-45 to Lincoln in the first round.
Russell and Lincoln traded the lead seven times before the Leopards used a 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter to go up 46-38. The Broncos cut the gap to two, but Lincoln held off Russell by scoring six of the game's final seven points, all from the foul line.
Lincoln outscored Russell 19-8 from the stripe.
Eric Rourke scored a career-high 13 points and Austin Donovan nine to pace the Broncos, who are 0-2 and have lost 21-straight games.
The Russell girls advance to Friday's semifinal and will take on Plainville at 7pm at the RHS gym. The Russell boys take on Nickerson at 8:30pm on Friday in the consolation bracket at the RMS gym.Read More Sports
