Russell Splits Final Games at Morris-Stephens Classic

The Russell High School girls basketball team edged Ellsworth 46-45 to take third place at the 16th annual Morris-Stephens Classic in Russell on Saturday, Dec. 8.
The Lady Broncos led 26-22 at halftime and went up 36-25 late in the third quarter. Ellsworth (1-3) whittled Russell's lead down to one late and had a chance to win the game at the horn, but missed a short jumper and the Lady Broncos held on for the victory.
Madison Beagley scored 16 points and Janna Schulte 10 to pace Russell (3-1).
The Russell boys dropped to 0-4 on the season after losing to Ellsworth 63-38 in the seventh place game.
The Broncos jumped out to a 9-6 lead, but the Bearcats (1-3) went on a 17-0 run to go up 23-9 and Russell never recovered. Ellsworth led 34-15 at halftime and 48-28 after three quarters.
Eric Rourke matched his career-high with 13 points for Russell. Keltonn Morris followed with 11.
Russell opens NCAA league play on Tuesday at home against Sacred Heart. The girls game starts at 6pm with the boys to follow around 7:30pm. Both games will be broadcast on Classic Hits 95.9 and www.krsl.com.Read More Sports
