Russell Swept by Republic Co.

The Russell High School girls basketball team was held to a season-low 35 points in a 50-35 loss to state-ranked Republic Co. in Belleville on Friday, Dec. 14.
Despite their offensive struggles, the Lady Broncos stayed within striking distance until the fourth quarter. Russell trailed 14-10 after one quarter, 25-15 at halftime and 37-27 after three quarters. The Lady Broncos cut the deficit to eight early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Buffs (6-0 overall, 2-0 NCAA) went on a 12-2 run to push their lead to 18. Russell could not get closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Madison Beagley scored 16 points and Janna Schulte 10 for Russell (4-2, 1-1).
Republic Co. started the boys game on a 10-0 run and rolled to a 73-22 win over Russell.
The Buffaloes led 24-4 after one quarter, 44-12 at the half and 66-17 after three quarters.
The Broncos were held to just five field goals and went 11 of 13 from the foul line.
Eric Rourke scored eight points and Keltonn Morris six for Russell (0-6, 0-2).
