Swanson has been the principal at Riley County High School for the last six years and before that, he was the principal at Scott City Community High School for three years.
Swanson says that “after spending nine years as an administrator and nine as a teacher, I know that my passion lies in the classroom and on the basketball court. We are very excited to make the move to Russell to start a new chapter in our lives.”
He has taught and coached at Southeast of Saline, Lebo and Hill City. While at Lebo, Swanson guided the Wolves to the Class 1A State Tournament in Hays twice and a fourth place finish, which earned him the Emporia Gazette Area Coach of the Year honor in 1999. He became the boys basketball coach at SE-Saline in 2000 and inherited a team coming off back-to-back one-win seasons. Five years later, the Trojans made their first trip to state in school history.
Swanson, who will also teach math at RHS, has been married to his wife Teri for 19 years. They have four boys: Jordan (sophomore), Cooper (seventh grader), Paxton (third grader) and Carter (first grader).
Swanson takes over for Mark Paul and inherits a Russell boys basketball team that went 1-20 last season and has lost 56 of their last 58 games.
