Boys: Russell 52, Ellsworth 47
The Russell girls dropped back to 500 after suffering their second loss of the season on Saturday, December 14 as they fell to Phillipsburg, 45-37, and finished this year's Morris-Stephens Classic in sixth place.
The Lady Broncos led the first two quarters, 17-9 at the end of one and 22-20 at the half, but were outscored by the Lady Panthers 15 to eight in the third frame and once Phillipsburg took the lead, they never gave it back.
Russell was eight of 12 from the foul line, while Phillipsburg was 15 of 20.
Alex Ptacek and Megan Boxberger led the Lady Broncos with 13 points, a new career high for Ptacek. Kyleigh Kasper recorded seven rebounds to lead the team.
Russell falls to 2-2.
For the first time since 2010, the Russell boys, with their 52-47 win over Ellsworth Saturday night, have won two games in a row to finish the 2013 Morris-Stephens Classic in fifth place.
The Broncos trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but put together an 18-6 run in the second period to lead at the break, 26-16. Their lead dwindled to only 33-32 at the end of three, but a neck-and-neck battle in the final frame, highlighted by a few timely free throw makes and a couple three pointers by Colton Fritschen, eventually went Russell's way and the Broncos pulled off the tight victory.
Fritschen led Russell with 22 points, including five threes; far and away a new career high for the freshman. Austin Donovan, Jordan Swanson and Reshean Holloway each notched seven.
The Broncos improve to 2-2, doubling their win total from a season ago.
The Russell girls and boys will next officially start NCAA league play as they head to Salina Tuesday, December 17 to take on Sacred Heart. Both games will be broadcast live on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.Read More Sports
