RHS Splits League Opener at Sacred Heart

The Russell High School girls basketball team overcame a cold shooting night with a solid defensive effort and won their NCAA league opener 32-24 against Sacred Heart in Salina on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
The Lady Broncos trailed 5-4 after one quarter, but outscored SHHS 13-4 in the second quarter to go up 17-9 at halftime. Russell extended their lead to 26-16 early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Knights rallied to within five. The Lady Broncos answered back with a 5-0 run to go back up by 10 and went on to the eight-point victory.
Megan Boxberger and Caitlyn Craven each scored nine points for Russell.
The Lady Broncos are now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
In the boys game, Russell held a brief 2-0 lead, but after that, it was all Sacred Heart as the Knights rolled to a 68-30 victory.
The Broncos trailed 21-2 after the first quarter, 44-17 at halftime and 62-24 after three quarters.
Reshean Holloway had nine points to pace the Broncos, who are now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NCAA.
Russell wraps up the December portion of their schedule on Friday at home against Republic Co. The girls game begins at 6pm with the boys to follow around 7:30pm. Both games will be broadcast on Classic Hits 95.9 and streamed here on www.krsl.com.Read More Sports
