Boys: Republic County 59, Russell 36
The Russell girls continued their seesaw season and dropped back to 500 after suffering their first league loss on Friday, December 20 as they fell to Republic County, 41-34.
The Lady Broncos led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, but wouldn't lead again all night as the Lady Buffs took control in the second period, leading 12-10 at the half and 23-15 at the end of three. In the fourth quarter, 12 made free throws from Republic County and 10 from Russell made the final score swell toward the end of a relatively low-scoring contest.
Overall, Russell was 14 of 22 from the foul line, while Republic County was 18 of 29.
Megan Boxberger paced the Lady Broncos with 10 points. Alex Ptacek tallied eight.
Russell falls to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NCAA.
The Russell boys didn't have much luck Friday night either as they also lost to Republic County at home by the final score of 59-36.
The Broncos were shutout in the first frame, 16-0, and never led all night. The score at halftime was 28-12 in favor of the Buffaloes and 41-22 at the end of the third. Pulling to within eight at one point in the fourth quarter, Russell mounted a charge, but it wasn't enough as Republic County cruised to the 23-point victory.
Noah Gfeller led Russell with 10 points on five of eight from the charity stripe. Jordan Swanson notched nine points.
The Broncos fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Following Christmas break, the Russell girls and boys will next head to Ellsworth on January 7 to take on the Bearcats in league play. Both games will be broadcast live on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.Read More Sports
