Boys: SE of Saline 80, Russell 43
The Russell High School girls basketball team notched its third consecutive win Tuesday night with a 53-45 victory at home against SE of Saline.
The Lady Broncos led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and 30-12 at halftime. However, the Lady Trojans outscored Russell 13-9 in the third to bring the score to a Bronco lead of 39-25 at the end of three. Again though, as has happened before this season, Russell's excellent shooting from the foul line in the fourth quarter sealed the victory. The Lady Broncos were 10 of 17 from the charity stripe in the final frame, compared to SE of Saline's three-of-four in the fourth.
Megan Boxberger led Russell in scoring with 16 points, Janna Schulte tallied 14, all in the first half, and Alex Ptacek notched 13. Kyleigh Kasper grabbed 10 rebounds.
Russell improves to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.
In the boys game, Russell suffered its second consecutive 35-plus point loss, as SE of Saline handed it to the Broncos Tuesday night, beating the home team 80-43.
The Broncos trailed 18-9 after one, faced a workable deficit of 45-29 at halftime, but only scored four points in the third to trail 62-33 at the end of three and could not overcome the large Trojan lead.
Russell's leading scorer was Reshean Holloway with 13. Holloway knocked down two threes and also jammed his third dunk of the season in the second quarter. He also led the Broncos in boards with five.
The Broncos fall to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the NCAA.
Russell hits the road again Friday as the Broncos head to Hays to take on TMP. The girls game begins at 6 PM with the boys to follow at around 7:45 PM. Catch both games on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.Read More Sports
