Russell Splits at Minneapolis

The Russell girls moved into sole possession of first place in the NCAA league standings with a 51-37 win over Minneapolis on Friday, Jan. 31 at the MHS Gym.
The Lady Broncos led 8-4 at the end of the first quarter and trailed briefly in the second frame before retaking the 23-21 lead at the break. Russell led 35-31 at the end of three and played solid defense down the stretch to pick up the victory.
Kyleigh Kasper scored a career-high 23 points for the Lady Broncos.
Russell is now 8-6 overall and 5-1 in league play. Minneapolis falls to 9-4 and 4-2 in the NCAA.
In the boys game, Russell battled the Lions for three quarters before Minneapolis pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 57-41 victory.
The Broncos trailed at the end of the first quarter by only four points, as the score was 15-11 heading into the second stanza. In the second quarter, Minneapolis saw their lead swell to 35-18 at halftime. Russell rallied though and only trailed by six after three quarters, with the score at 42-36 going into the final eight minutes. Slowing their offense down and relying on late foul shooting, the Lions outscored the Broncos 15-5 in the final period to seal the win. Only two of those 15 points in the fourth did not come from the foul line.
Noah Gfeller scored a career-best 12 points for Russell.
The Broncos fall to 2-12. Minneapolis improves to 11-2.
