RHS Splits at Republic Co.

The Russell girls overcame a 16-point halftime deficit and beat Republic Co. 40-34 to remain in first place in the North Central Activities Association on Friday, Feb. 7 in Belleville.
The Lady Broncos trailed 26-10 at halftime, but outscored RCHS 30-8 in the second half to earn a split of the season series.
Megan Boxberger led Russell with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Kyleigh Kasper followed with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Kendsey Johnson had 16 points for Republic Co.(4-10 overall, 2-5 NCAA).
Russell improves to 9-6 overall and 6-1 in the NCAA.
In the boys game, Republic Co. hit 19-of-23 free throws, including 14-of-14 in the fourth quarter, to hold off and beat Russell 55-47.
The Broncos trailed 15-5 late in the first quarter, but rallied over the next three quarters. Russell trailed 28-20 at halftime and 35-34 at the end of the third. The Broncos tied the game late at 47, but never could take the lead as the Buffaloes (6-8, 3-4 NCAA) scored the game's final eight points all from the foul line.
Austin Donovan finished with a career-high 13 points for Russell. Eric Rourke had nine points. Noah Gfeller and Reshean Holloway each scored eight.
Republic Co.'s Trevor Allen and Jeff Hadachek each scored a game-high 18 points.
Russell falls to 2-13 overall, 0-7 in the NCAA and has lost 11 in-a-row.
The Russell boys and girls return home for their next three games and will start that stretch on Tuesday against Sacred Heart. The girls game begins at 6pm with the boys to follow around 7:45pm. Listen to both games on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.Read More Sports
