Russell/Victoria Takes Third in 4A Div. 2

2014 Russell/Victoria Baseball Team 5/30/14The Russell/Victoria baseball team ended up going 2-1 and placing third at the Class 4A Div. 2 State Tournament at Pratt's Stanion Field on Friday, May 30.

After rolling by Wichita Trinity 11-2 on Thursday, the Broncos were held to a season-low three hits and committed six errors in a 10-0 five inning loss to Kansas City-Bishop Ward (15-10) in the semifinals. Russell bounced back in the third place game, scoring seven times in the second inning, four in the third and three in a fifth in a 15-1 five inning victory over Baxter Springs (19-6).

Brandon Ridgley (3-3) allowed seven runs on nine hits over four-plus innings and took the loss against Bishop Ward. Brandon Bachar (1-1) went the distance against Baxter Springs and scattered five hits for his first win of the season.

Russell/Victoria had 15 hits against Baxter Springs. Chase Prester led the way with four hits and finished the state tournament by going 8-for-10 at the plate. Brady Dinkel, Kaden Rohr, Taylor Rome and Grant Weber each had two hits.

The Broncos finish the spring with a 16-9 record and earn their best finish in four trips to state since the program began in 1993.

KC-Bishop Ward went on to win their 13th state championship in school history on Friday night, beating top-seeded Perry-Lecompton 5-2.
