Former RHS Standout Becomes Asst. AD at Western State

RHS Alum Jill Mahoney 6-17-14GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University welcomes back former Mountaineer women's basketball assistant coach and 2002 Russell High School alum Jill Mahoney as the next Assistant Athletic Director for Western Athletics.

Interim Athletic Director Jason Carmichael and Executive Vice President Brad Baca made the announcement Monday.

"We are pleased to announce the return of Jill Mahoney to the Western State campus. As she returns she finds herself in a different role with some exciting challenges on the horizon. We are excited to see Jill grow into these new job responsibilities," Carmichael said. "We are even more thrilled to know that Jill is very much still the same. At her core she is loyal to Western and Mountaineer Athletics. We look forward to having her wearing Crimson & Slate for many years to come."

Mahoney returns to Western after serving as the women's basketball assistant coach on the Mountaineers' 2011-12 team that earned the first home playoff game since 1987, first post season victory since 1988 and helped coach Western to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout Championship game.

"I am beyond excited in returning to Western State Colorado University. I would like to thank President Salsbury, Vice President Brad Baca, Interim Athletic Director Jason Carmichael, and the entire committee for their efforts and support in bringing me back to Gunnison," Mahoney said. "Three years ago I stepped onto this beautiful campus, where I instantly developed a deep level of pride as a mountaineer. I believe in the leadership, the coaching staffs and the people that make Western such a wonderful environment. I look forward to propelling the university and athletic department to new heights."

Prior to returning to Western, Mahoney was the women's basketball assistant coach at Southern Utah University from 2012-14. Mahoney was responsible for coordinating all team travel, monitoring academic progress, organizing and ordering team apparel, scouting of opponents, game film exchange and video coordination, and coordination of community service. Along with other responsibilities as the assistant coach, Mahoney helped guide Southern Utah to the first conference championship and first national post season appearance in Southern Utah women's basketball history.

Also during her time at Southern Utah, Mahoney held the title of Senior Women's Administrator. These responsibilities included being the Title IX Liaison, advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, advisor for women's soccer and holding a position on the upper administration committee.

Before coming to Western in 2011, Mahoney was part of a Grand Canyon University staff that won three Pacific West Conference Championships and advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in 2010-11. She coached offense and specialty plays for the Antelopes, and oversaw the program's strength and conditioning for the preseason and postseason. Mahoney also handled administrative duties including travel, equipment, academics and budgets.

Mahoney spent her last season of eligibility at Grand Canyon and led the Antelopes to an undefeated record in PacWest action. She was the Newcomer of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, and helped lead Colby Community College to a top-10 national ranking in NJCAA Division I.

"The people that make up the Gunnison community, Western State and the Athletic Department made my decision to return, very simple," Mahoney said. "Once again, Mount up!"
