RHS Alum Helps Pitt State to MIAA Title

Noah Gfeller, a 2016 graduate from Russell High School, helped the Pittsburg State Gorillas win the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Conference Championship on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Missouri Southern University in Joplin, Mo.
Gfeller, running in the open 800 meters, came in seeded 10th and the freshman surprised the field on Saturday by qualifying for the finals and in Sunday's finals he finished fifth overall. Also on Saturday, Gfeller ran the 800 meter leg of the distance medley relay and helped lead the relay team to a fifth-place finish. Earlier this season, Gfeller broke into Pitt State's top 10 all-time 800 meter performances by posting a 1:55.08 and currently ranks ninth in PSU history.
The Pitt State men, currently ranked 22nd in the country, upset #6 nationally ranked Missouri Southern to claim the conference championship.
The Pitt State women also won the MIAA Conference Championship, marking the first time since 1995 that both teams claimed the conference title on the same weekend. The #3 nationally ranked Gorillas ran away with the conference championship, winning by 71 points. The Pitt State woman are the defending NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field National Champions. Noah's sister, Alainar, a senior at RHS, will join the Pitt State women's track and field team next year.Read More Sports
