Russell Boys End Season at Norton

RHS BasketballThe Russell High School boys basketball team ended its season Tuesday, February 28 with a 59-37 loss at top-seeded Norton in the first round of the 3A Sub-State.

The Broncos scored the first bucket of the game, but Norton dominated from there. The Bluejays led 16-6 after one quarter, 30-16 at halftime and 43-22 after three periods.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the free throw line, but Russell turned the ball over 19 times.

Travis Ochs led Russell with nine points.

The Broncos finish the season 5-16 overall and 2-10 in the North Central Activities Association. It's Russell's first season with five or more overall wins and two or more league wins since 2009-2010.

Norton moves on to the Russell 3A Sub-State Semifinals and will face Ellsworth Friday night at 7:30 in Russell. The Bearcats defeated TMP-Marian 55-44 Tuesday in Ellsworth. The Phillipsburg and Beloit boys will play in the other semifinal game Friday in Russell at 6 PM. The Panthers beat Minneapolis 54-25 Tuesday and the Trojans knocked off Hoisington, 69-38.
