Russell Girls Defeat Ellsworth, Advance to Sub-State Championship Game

RHS BasketballThe Russell High School girls basketball team defeated Ellsworth 54-40 Thursday, March 2 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell to advance to the Sub-State Championship game Saturday.

The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the end of one quarter and extended their advantage to 11 points early in the second period, but Ellsworth charged back to within three points at halftime. Russell led 25-22 at the break. The Lady Broncos controlled the second half, leading 41-32 after three quarters and cruising to victory from there.

Russell made 15-of-17 free throws and hit five three-pointers.

Jaclyn Schulte led Russell with 17 points. She shot 7-of-7 from the foul line. Tiffany Dortland followed with 12 points. She buried three three-pointers.

The Lady Broncos improve to 19-3 and have now won 15-straight games. It was also Russell's third win over Ellsworth this season.

The Russell girls will now face longtime rival Thomas More Prep-Marian Saturday evening at 6 in Russell in the Sub-State Championship game as the Lady Monarchs beat Beloit 49-30 Thursday in Russell. The game will be broadcast on 95.9 Jack FM and KRSL.com.
