Russell Lady Broncos are Sub-State Runners-Up

Russell Lady Broncos 2017 Sub-State Runners-UpThe Russell High School girls basketball team ended its season Saturday, March 4 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell as Sub-State runners-up with a 53-36 loss to rival TMP-Marian in the Russell 3A Sub-State Championship game.

The Lady Monarchs started hot and led 18-7 after the first quarter, but Russell pulled to within six points at the halftime break. TMP led 26-20 at the half. The Lady Monarchs stretched their lead back to 10 after three periods and started the fourth quarter with a 40-30 advantage. TMP hit free throws down the stretch and pulled away for the win.

Russell made 7-of-8 free throws, but TMP shot 16-of-22 from the foul line.

The Lady Monarchs also out-rebounded Russell 32 to 16 and finished with 14 offensive boards, compared to only five offensive rebounds for the Lady Broncos.

Tiffany Dortland led Russell with 12 points. Jaclyn Schulte followed with 10 points.

The Lady Broncos finish the season with a 19-4 overall record. The Russell girls won a share with Beloit of the North Central Activities Association league championship with a 10-2 league record. The Lady Broncos also won the 2017 Hoisington Winter Jam Tournament in January and finished second in the 2016 Amos Morris-George Stephens Classic Tournament in December.
