RHS Drops Opener to Sacred Heart

After have their season-openers postponed or canceled due to rain over the last 10 days, the Russell High School softball team finally got its season underway on Thursday, April 6 against Sacred Heart in Salina.

But it ended up being a tough day for the Lady Broncos, who were swept by the Lady Knights 12-0 in five innings and 16-1 in three.

In the opener, Sacred Heart scored in each of the first four innings, highlighted by a five-run fourth, and took advantage of eight Russell errors. In game two, the Lady Knights plated seven runs in each of the first two innings and added two more in the third. The Lady Broncos scored their lone run in the third inning.

Whitney Nuss (0-1) and Abi Cross (0-1) took the losses in each game.

Brenda Neal had two of Russell's three hits in game one. Neal had two more hits in game two. Russell finished with six as a team.

The Lady Broncos fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the North Central Activities Association.

Russell is right back in action on Friday, April 7 as they play a make-up doubleheader at Ellsworth at 4pm.
