Russell/Victoria Rolls into Regional Title Game

RHS BaseballKyle Farmer scattered four hits in six innings of work and Austin Dale and Caden Oberle drove in two runs apiece as Russell/Victoria opened postseason play with a 9-0 win over Larned in the Class 4A Division ll Regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 16 in Hoisington.

The Broncos actually took a 15-0 lead during a six-run seventh inning that included a two-run homer by Dale which would have given him four RBI. But when the game was stopped by lightning with two outs in the top of the frame, the score reverted back to what it was after six innings since the half-inning was still in progress.

Russell/Victoria scored runs in each of the first two innings on an RBI groundout by Dale and a single by Oberle.  The lead grew to 6-0 during a four-run rally in the fourth with the big hit off the bat of Brooks Nichols who drove in two runs with a single with a third run scoring after an error by Larned leftfielder Mason Perez.  Three more runs crossed the plate in the sixth keyed Tanner Rome's RBI single which led to another run on an error by Indians rightfielder Hunter Fitzpatrick.

Farmer (3-3) was outstanding, despite retiring the side in order only once. He registered six strikeouts including back-to-back K's to end the sixth frame.

Russell/Victoria (8-10) ended a five-game losing streak with Tuesday's victory and will now play Concordia in the regional championship game with a trip the state tournament at stake. The Panthers scored two runs in the sixth inning earlier Tuesday to get by host Hoisington/Central Plains 4-2.

The weather that ended the Bronco game forced postponement of the title game until Thursday, May 18 at 1 PM.
