RHS Tops Hugoton to Make Regional Final

RHS Softball Megan Peeler HR 5-16-17One day after snapping a 37-game losing streak, the Russell High School softball team continued their postseason magic with a 7-3 win over Hugoton in the semifinals of the Russell Class 3A Regional on Tuesday, May 16 at the Memorial Park Complex.

The Lady Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Megan Peeler scored on a passed ball. Russell made it 5-0 with four runs in the fourth. Peeler highlighted the inning with a three-run, inside-the-park homerun. After Hugoton plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Broncos capped off their scoring with two runs in the fifth to go up 7-2.

The game was stopped in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out due to lightning and eventually called final when rain and storms moved into the area.

Abi Cross had three of Russell's nine hits. Peeler and Liberty Decker each had two.

RHS Softball Whitney Nuss 5-16-17Whitney Nuss (2-14) went the distance and allowed three runs, one earned, on eight hits and struck out five.

Russell improves to 2-18 and is now one win away from their second trip to state in school history. To get there they will need to beat top-seeded TMP-Marian (15-6), who shutout Ellsworth 7-0 in Tuesday's other semifinal game. The regional championship game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but postponed due to weather and now moved and set for 2pm on Thursday, May 18 at TMP in Hays.

We'll have coverage of the game on KRSL Russell Radio and KRSL.com.
