Broncos Open with Loss at Ellsworth

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team opened the 2017 season in Ellsworth Friday, September 1 with a 34-6 loss to the Ellsworth Bearcats.

Ellsworth (1-0, 1-0 NCAA) scored first at the 9:19 mark in the first quarter with a 49 yard touchdown run by quarterback Zac Schneider. The two-point conversion try was no good. Russell (0-1, 0-1 NCAA) answered with 5:38 left in the opening period when cornerback Kyler Fritschen intercepted a Schneider pass and ran it back for a 12 yard TD return. The extra point try was no good. The score was tied 6-6 after one frame.

Ellsworth extended its lead at the 8:54 mark in the second quarter with a two yard touchdown run by Schneider that capped a nine play, 55 yard drive. The two point conversion was good and the Bearcats took a 14-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

It was all Ellsworth in the second half. The Bearcats scored another rushing TD and a safety in the third quarter, and two receiving touchdowns in the final period.

The Broncos totaled just 23 yards on the ground and 57 yards through the air.

Ellsworth totaled 367 yards, 238 on the ground and 129 through the air. Schneider amassed 195 yards rushing, three rushing touchdowns and one passing TD.

Each team had two interceptions and each also committed 11 penalties.
