Beloit Spoils Russell's Homecoming

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team had its Homecoming game spoiled Friday, September 29 with a 36-14 loss to Beloit at Shaffer Field in Russell.

Beloit (4-1, 3-1 NCAA) controlled the first half, scored three passing touchdowns and took an 18-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Russell (3-2, 3-2 NCAA) mounted a comeback to start the third quarter. Bronco quarterback Austin Price finished a seven-play, 75-yard drive at the 9:47 mark in the third with a five-yard TD run. At the 6:00 mark in the third period, Price hooked up with tight end Travis Tammen for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Russell kicker Garrett Ewers nailed both extra point attempts, but the Broncos would not score again. Beloit led 18-14 after three quarters.

The Trojans poured it on in the final frame, scoring three more touchdowns to pull away.

Beloit outgained Russell 543 yards to 116 yards. The Broncos finished with only 36 yards rushing and 80 yards passing. The Trojans totaled 363 yards rushing and 180 yards passing.

Price led Russell with 37 yards rushing on 11 carries. He completed nine passes for 80 yards. Wide receiver Chris Pummell had four catches for 29 yards.

Running back Zach Meier led Beloit with 201 yards rushing on 25 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Hudson Gray completed eight passes for 180 yards. Four of those eight passes were for TDs. Running back Hudson Smith caught two of those passes, both for touchdowns, and totaled 80 yards.

The turnover battle was even. Russell forced one fumble, but Price also threw one interception.

On another note, Seniors Kyle Farmer and Jaclyn Schulte were named Homecoming King and Queen.
