TMP Stuns Russell

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team suffered a disappointing 46-6 loss Friday, October 20 to TMP-Marian at Lewis Field in Hays. With the loss, the Broncos have been eliminated from playoff contention.

TMP (3-5, 2-3 Mid-Continent League, 1-1 3A District 14) scored two passing touchdowns and one rushing TD in the first half to lead 20-0 at halftime.

The Monarchs blocked a punt for a touchdown and scored three more passing TDs before Russell (4-4, 4-2 NCAA, 0-2 3A District 14) scored its only touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter on a four-yard run by running back Chris Pummell.

TMP outgained Russell 598 yards to 116 yards. The Broncos finished with only 33 yards rushing and 83 yards passing. The Monarchs totaled 178 yards rushing and 420 yards passing.

TMP quarterback David McFarland passed for 420 yards on 23 completions and five touchdowns. In 2017, McFarland has passed for 2,771 yards and 23 touchdowns, both TMP single season records. Monarch wide receiver Creighton Renz was the top receiver, totaling 181 yards on nine catches, two of which were for TDs. TMP running back Gavin Schumacher finished with 153 yards rushing on 19 carries. He had one receiving touchdown, one rushing TD and also recovered the blocked punt for a touchdown.

Russell forced three interceptions. TMP forced three fumbles.

The penalties were costly. The Broncos finished with 16 penalties for 140 yards. The Monarchs finished with 12 penalties for 85 yards.

Friday's win for TMP was the first home win for the Monarchs since they beat Russell in 2012.
