Sylvan-Lucas Makes State; Russell, Remaining Area Schools Fall Short

2017 KSHSAA State Volleyball LogoSylvan-Lucas is headed to the Class 1A Div. I State Volleyball Tournament after winning their own sub-state on Saturday, Oct. 21.

After receiving a first-round bye, the top-seeded Lady Mustangs beat Little River in three (25-20, 20-25, 27-25) in the semifinals and Stockton in three (15-25, 25-20, 25-20) in the championship. Sylvan-Lucas (36-2) advances to state for the first time since 2014. The Lady Mustangs are seeded second and will take on LeRoy-Southern Coffey Co. at 9:30am, Atwood-Rawlins Co. at 11:30am and Coldwater-South Central at 1:30pm in pool play on Friday, Oct. 27 at Gross Coliseum in Hays. The semifinals, third place and championship matches are Saturday, Oct. 28.

Russell lost to Minneapolis in two (25-14, 25-9) in the first round of the Russell 3A Sub-State. The Lady Broncos end their season with an 11-23 record. Beloit beat Minneapolis to win the sub-state and advance to state.

Victoria competed in the Sylvan-Lucas Sub-State and lost in the opening round to Little River in three (25-21, 22-25, 25-21). The Lady Knights wind up the season with an 8-19 mark.

Wilson and Natoma each played in the Beloit-St. John's/Tipton 1A Div. II Sub-State. After receiving a first-round bye, Wilson beat Southern Cloud in three (22-25, 25-14, 18-13) in the semifinals before losing to Beloit-St. John's/Tipton in two (25-12, 25-15) in the championship. Natoma fell in the first round to Tescott in two (25-15, 27-25). Wilson finishes with an 11-23 record and Natoma with an 8-22 mark.
