Sylvan-Lucas' Season Ends with Loss at Otis-Bison

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolOTIS-Anton Foust scored four touchdowns rushing and passed for two more as the Otis-Bison Cougars overcame an early deficit and ralliled past Sylvan-Lucas 60-26 Friday night in the first round of the 8-Man Division ll Football Playoffs.

Otis-Bison won the opening coin toss but Sylvan-Lucas gained possession when a squib kick bounced off a Cougar player giving the Mustangs excellent field position.  Quarterback Tyler Barrientes starting in place of the injured R.J. Haberer then tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Streit for an early 6-0 lead after the missed two-point conversion.  Sylvan-Lucas then recovered the next kickoff when the ball traveled more than 10 yards without being touched by an Otis-Bison player.  Five plays later, Beau Batchman found the end zone from eight yards out and after another missed conversion, the Mustangs were on top 12-0.

Otis-Bison however, demonstrated its quick-strike ability needing just one play to get on the scoreboard when Foust scampered 40 yards for a touchdown to make the score 12-8.  However, the Mustangs answered again with a 32-yard run by Owen Krueger for a 20-8 advantage.  Otis-Bison closed the gap at 20-16 on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Foust to Maitlin Wiltse and the two-point conversion.  Foust's one-yard run later in the quarter gave the Cougars their first lead of the contest at 24-20.

With 1:18 left in the half, Foust expanded the margin to 30-20 with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Wiltse before the two-point conversion was not successful.

Despite dominating time of possession in the third quarter, Sylvan-Lucas could not turn it into points.  After being stopped on downs inside the 10-yard line, Foust ripped off a 71-yard touchdown run to increase the Otis-Bison advantage to 36-20.  Luke Higgason's eight-yard run made the score 44-20 after three quarters.  Barrientes ended the Mustang scoring drought early in the fourth quarter with a one-yard run, but Otis-Bison would pull away on touchdown runs of 31 and six yarsds by Foust and Higgason respectively.

Sylvan-Lucas had no problem moving the ball as the Mustangs rolled up 399 yards of total offesne including 213 rushing by Krueger.  Foust though accounted for six of the Cougars eight touchdowns with the four rushing scores and the two passing TD's to Wiltse.  Foust also rushed for more than 150 yards on the ground.

Making their first playoff appearance in three years, Sylvan-Lucas' season comes to an end with an 8-2 record.  Otis (9-1) advances to the State Quarterfinals where they will meet Ingalls next Friday.  Ingalls was a 50-32 winner over Pretty Prairie in their first round game.
