RHS Opens Season with Home Sweep

The Russell High School girls basketball team opened the 2017-2018 season Friday, December 1 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell with a 70-20 win.

The Lady Broncos led 14-3 after the first quarter, 35-6 at halftime and 65-10 after three frames.

Russell's Tiffany Dortland scored 14 points in the third quarter and led the way with 20 total points. Jaclyn Schulte recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Leiker followed with 14 points. Janae Schulte scored a career-high 10 points.

The Lady Broncos forced 28 Ellinwood turnovers.

Russell improves to 1-0.

In the boys game, Ellinwood led much of the way, but Russell used a 9-0 run late in the third quarter and early in the final period to come from behind and win 54-49.

Ellinwood had a 9-8 advantage after the first period and a 21-16 lead at halftime. The Eagles led 35-28 after three quarters. Russell roared back with that 9-0 run and also shot 11 of 15 from the free throw line in the fourth frame to come back for the victory.

Austin Price led Russell with 17 points. Tyler Whipple followed with 10 points.

The Broncos were 20 of 30 from the foul line and forced 15 turnovers.

The Russell boys improve to 1-0.

The Russell girls and boys hit the road Monday, December 4 to face Phillipsburg in the first round of the Amos Morris/George Stephens Classic Tournament at the Lincoln Elementary School Gym in Lincoln.
