Russell Swept at Beloit to Open 2018

The Russell High School girls basketball team opened the new year with a tight 45-44 loss at Beloit on Friday, January 5.

The Lady Broncos trailed 13-10 after one quarter, but went to the locker room at halftime tied 17-17. Beloit jumped back ahead 37-31 after three periods. Russell's Tiffany Dortland scored nine points in the fourth quarter, but missed a three-pointer at the final buzzer.

Dortland led Russell with 21 points.

Beloit's Sydney Johnson scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds.

The Lady Trojans out-rebounded Russell 33 to 21.

The Russell girls fall to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league play.

In the boys game, Beloit got a bit of a scare from Russell early, but the Trojans would eventually pull away and cruise to a 68-47 win.

Beloit led 19-14 after the first frame, 36-23 at the half and 50-36 after three quarters. The Trojans extended their lead in the final period by hitting four three-pointers.

Koby Decker led Russell with 10 points.

Russell falls to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.
