Russell Girls Win Big, Boys Comeback Falls Short

The Russell High School girls basketball team picked up a dominating 72-41 win over Southeast of Saline Tuesday, January 9 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter, led 42-25 at halftime and held a 66-33 advantage after three periods. It was a running clock for most of the fourth quarter.

Tiffany Dortland led Russell with 21 points and three three-pointers. Jaclyn Schulte followed with 19 points and Sam Leiker had 15 points.

The Lady Broncos forced 20 Lady Trojan turnovers.

The Russell girls improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

In the boys game, Russell lost 54-46, but made it very interesting in the fourth quarter.

Southeast led 18-8 after the first period and 26-14 at the half. The Trojans held a 47-31 lead heading into the final frame, a 16-point advantage. Using fouls, the Broncos clawed back to within seven points early in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer.

Austin Price led Russell with 16 points, all scored in the second half.

Russell was 5-of-11 from the free throw line. The Trojans were 16-of-44 on foul shots.

Russell falls to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.
