Broncos, Bearcats Split

The Russell High School girls basketball team defeated Ellsworth for the third time this season with a 60-43 win Tuesday, January 30 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 17-4 lead after the first period and held a 32-13 advantage at halftime. Both teams were pretty even in the third quarter and Russell entered the final frame leading 48-27. The Lady Bearcats tried to mount a comeback, but Russell held them off.

Jaclyn Schulte led Russell with 19 points, 10 in the first quarter, and eight rebounds. Tiffany Dortland followed with 18 points.

The Russell girls improve to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the NCAA, which leads the league.

In the boys game, the Broncos led a majority of the contest, but in the end, Ellsworth came away with the 46-42 victory.

Russell held a slim 10-8 lead after one quarter. The Broncos stretched their advantage to 25-13 with about two minutes left in the first half, before Ellsworth scored the final seven points of the half. Russell led 25-20 at the break. The Bearcats continued to battle back in the third stanza and claimed their first lead of the game with about two minutes left in the third. Ellsworth led 39-36 after three quarters. The lead changed hands several times in the final frame. Ellsworth was able to hang on with free throw makes.

Austin Price led Russell with 20 points. Kyle Farmer had nine boards.

The Russell boys fall to 4-11 overall and 0-7 in the league.
