RHS Splits at Republic County

The Russell High School girls basketball team extended its win streak to eight games with a 55-32 victory on Friday, February 2 at Republic County.

The Lady Broncos held a slim 11-10 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Lady Buffs 11 to 5 in the second period to stretch the lead to 22-15 at the half. Russell allowed zero Republic County field goals and only three made free throws in the third stanza and broke the game open, leading 40-18 after three frames. The Russell girls would cruise from there.

Janae Schulte led Russell with a career-high 14 points. Older sister Jaclyn Schulte recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Tiffany Dortland followed with 12 points.

The Russell girls improve to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the NCAA, which leads the league.

In the boys game, the Broncos started very slow and battled back late, but lost 45-35.

Republic County started the game on an 8-0 run. Russell hit only one free throw in the first period and trailed 12-1 after one quarter. Both teams were even in the second stanza and the Buffaloes led 19-8 at the break. Scoring was pretty even in the third quarter as well and Republic County entered the fourth period leading 35-22. The Broncos battled back to as close as five points, but wouldn't get any closer down the stretch.

Austin Price led Russell with 12 points.

The Russell boys fall to 4-12 overall and 0-8 in the league.
