Russell Hoops Splits with Sacred Heart

Russell Bronco BasketballTiffany Dortland scored a career-high 31 points and Lady Broncos defense forced 31 turnovers as Russell rolled past Sacred Heart 62-30 in North Central Activities Association girls basketball action Tuesday evening at the Amos Morris Gymnasium.

The Russell offense started slowly but Dortland scored 10 of her points in the first quarter to help the Lady Broncos out to an early 12-4 lead.  Russell then outscored the Lady Knights 17-6 in the second stanza to lead 29-10 at halftime.

The lead swelled to 45-16 at the end of three quarters and despite Sacred Heart scoring the first four points of the final period, the game's last six minutes were played with a running clock. The only other Lady Bronco in double figures for the game was Jaclyn Schulte with 12 points while Janae Schulte added nine.

Tegahan Slagle led Sacred Heart with eight points.  Russell improves to 15-2 overall and remains with a share of first place in the league standings with an 8-1 NCAA record.

In the boys game, Caleb Jordan and Charlie Skidmore each scored 18 points to help Sacred Heart pull away from the Broncos 61-41 in a game that proved to be more difficult for the Knights than the final score would indicate.

With the score tied 6-6, Sacred Heart closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run.  After Russell cut the deficit to 14-10 early in the second quarter, the Knights went on another 25-0 surge before Austin Price sank a free throw to stop it.  Sacred Heart led 34-10 at halftime but after leading 39-10 early in the third quarter, Russell closed the gap with a 22-7 run and got as close as 52-39 early in the fourth quarter before the Knights made one last push to claim the 20-point victory.

Price scored 11 of his team-leading 13 points for Russell in the second half as the Broncos were able to keep the game from going to a running clock at any point.

Russell falls to 4-13 overall and 0-9 in the NCAA.
