Sylvan-Lucas Boys Win Overtime Thriller to Gain Split with Wilson

BasketballSYLVAN GROVE-For the second consecutive season, four quarters wasn't enough to decide the outcome between the Boys Basketball teams from Sylvan-Lucas and Wilson.

Last year on the second Friday night in February, the Mustangs pulled out a 54-50 triple-overtime win over the Dragons in Wilson.  Fast-forward 365 days and it was almost deja vu with Sylvan-Lucas winning again 54-53 but needing just a single overtime in this case.

Wilson jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first quarter before Sylvan-Lucas closed the period with a 14-3 run and led 16-10 after the first eight minutes.  The lead grew to as much as nine points in the second quarter before the Dragons closed the gap to 29-24 at halftime.

A 16-1 surge that spanned the second and third quarters allowed Wilson to regain the lead at 36-30 before the Mustangs scored eight straight points to go up 38-36.  Wilson scored the third quarter's final bucket and the game was tied 38-38 heading into the final quarter.  The Dragons then scored the first seven points of the fourth period to lead 45-38 but the Mustangs thanks to Dylan Streit's six free throws in eight attempts in the fourth quarter alone were able to pull closer and the score was 50-48 in favor of Wilson in the final minute of regulation.

R.J. Haberer who has missed most of the Basketball season after suffering a knee injury in Sylvan-Lucas' Football game against Wilson in October scored on a layup with 15 seconds left in regulation to tie the score 50-50.  On the ensuing possession, Wilson's Jayden Bess was called for a charging foul giving the Mustangs a chance to win the game in regulation.  However, a traveling violation was called on a drive to the basket as time expired and the contest went into overtime.

Tyler Barrientes knocked down two free throws early in overtime to give Sylvan-Lucas a 52-50 lead but Bess responded with a three-pointer and Wilson held a 53-52 advantage.  However, Streit who was held to two points in the first half scored a layup to put Sylvan-Lucas back in front 54-53.  The final minute and a half was suspenseful as Wilson appeared to be working for a last shot.  With one foul to give, the Mustangs committed that foul with 12 seconds left to try and disrupt Wilson's plans.  Then Bess was fouled with three seconds left.  The only free throw the Dragons attempted in the second half or overtime was missed by Bess and the ball was knocked out of bounds.  From there Sylvan-Lucas ran out the clock and held on for an amazing victory.

Streit led the Mustangs with 15 points while Haberer added 12.  Bess, despite Wilson's loss led all scorers with 25 points.

The Girls game did not have nearly this much drama as the Wilson Lady Dragons cruised to a 51-21 win over Sylvan-Lucas.  Thanks to early hot shooting by Wilson's Kendyl Zorn, the Lady Dragons raced out to an early 12-4 lead and were ahead 17-6 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Mustangs went ice cold from the floor allowing Wilson to pad their lead at intermission to 27-6.

From there Wilson was never threatened as the sixth-ranked Lady Dragons won their 14th game in 17 tries this season.

Zorn and Riley Dietz each led Wilson with 12 points while Katie Zelenka added 11.  Kerstin Decker led Sylvan-Lucas with seven points.
