Beloit Steals Two in Russell

The Russell High School girls basketball team saw its 10-game win streak and its chance to win the league both end Monday, February 19 with a 49-48 loss to Beloit at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

Russell's Tiffany Dortland scored 11 points in the first quarter and the Lady Broncos led 18-11 after one period. Russell stretched its advantage to 30-21 at halftime, but led only 38-32 after three frames. The Lady Trojans outscored Russell 17 to 10 in the final quarter. Russell did get a steal with just a few seconds left in the game, but missed a shot at the buzzer.

Dortland led Russell with 22 points. Jaclyn Schulte followed with 18 points, now just five points away from 1,000 points in her career. Schulte also had nine rebounds.

The Lady Broncos were only 1-of-3 from the free throw line and Beloit only committed five fouls in the game.

The Russell girls fall to 16-3 overall and 9-2 in the NCAA. Two of Russell's three losses were to Beloit.

The Lady Trojans improve to 16-3 overall and clinch the league championship at 11-1 in the NCAA.

In the boys game, it was close throughout, but Beloit finally gained some separation late in the contest and held on for the 49-41 win over Russell.2018 Winter Sports King and Queen

The lead changed hands several times in the first half. Russell led 8-7 after one stanza and trailed 19-17 at the half. The Trojans held a slim 33-32 advantage after three quarters and outscored Russell 16 to 9 in the fourth period.

Austin Price led the Broncos with 19 points.

Russell was only 3-of-10 from the foul line.

The Russell boys fall to 4-15 overall and 0-11 in the league.

Monday night was also Winter Sports Night. RHS Seniors Micah Nuss and Katherine Krauss were crowned King and Queen.
