RHS Finishes Regular Season with Split

The Russell High School girls basketball team finished its regular season Thursday, February 22 with a 59-39 win over Minneapolis at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

Both teams started slow. Minneapolis held an 11-6 lead after one quarter and a 15-14 advantage at halftime. Russell finally claimed its first lead of the game with about 6:30 left in the third period and the Lady Broncos ended the third ahead 32-25. It was all Russell in the final frame.

Tiffany Dortland led Russell with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Leiker followed with 20 points. Jaclyn Schulte scored 12 points and now has 1,007 points in her RHS career.

The Russell girls complete the regular season with a 17-3 overall record and a 10-2 NCAA record, which is second place in the league.

In the boys game, Minneapolis defeated Russell 58-40.

The game was close throughout the entire first half. The contest was tied 10-10 after the first stanza, but the Lions pulled ahead 21-17 at the half. Minneapolis outscored Russell 23 to 11 in the third quarter to extend the Lion lead to 44-28 heading into the final period. Minneapolis held Russell at bay in the fourth.

Austin Price led the Broncos with 19 points.

The Russell boys fall to 4-16 overall and 0-12 in the league.

Next, the Broncos and Lady Broncos compete in the Minneapolis 3A Sub-State Tournament. The Russell boys are the eight seed and travel to top-seeded TMP-Marian in Hays on Monday, February 26 for a 7 PM first round game. The Russell girls are the three seed and they host sixth-seeded Hoisington at Amos Morris Gym in Russell on Tuesday, February 27 at 7 PM in the first round. The boys game on Monday can be heard on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com. The girls game on Tuesday will be broadcast on KRSL 95.9 FM and KRSL.com.
